Music Lessons And Instruments Provided Free To Youth

Play It Forward!® Cleveland is providing musical instruments and lessons to students in grades 6-12 at no cost to the student.

Studies show that students who learn to play an instrument improve their language and math skills while also improving their physical coordination and social skills.

The program, funded by City of Cleveland Casino Funds, expands this spring to include lessons in violin, trumpet, guitar and drums. A long-term goal of the program is to form an inner city youth orchestra which would provide students the opportunity to perform at local festivals and city concerts.

Parents of Play It Forward!® Cleveland students had positive things to say about the impact of the program on their children:

“I have noticed positive changes in my children as far as structure. They’ve learned discipline.”

“It’s good to see [my children] not excited always about their phones, or about TV, or their games, or anything like that. They’re actually excited about doing something that’s productive.”

“Now when [my kids] listen to a song, we’re not just listening to a song, they’re listening for the beat, they’re listening for the different parts of the drum. They’ll say, ‘That’s the kick drum!’ […] So now they are listening more intently to the music.”
