Students create non-traditional portrait drawings using a variety of materials. Initially a collage is made using paper, torn book pages, ticket stubs, and other ephemera. Stamps, stencils, and paint smears are then layered over top the collage. Lastly, a portrait will be drawn over top the previous layers using charcoal, colored pencils and pastels. This workshop integrates and reinforces grade level reading curriculum as the foundation for the collage and character portraits, science curriculum through the use of scientific texts and drawings, and social studies through maps, historical documents, historical figures, and related ephemera.
