Movers & Readers
In this engaging and highly customizable program, students will demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables, and phonemes (sounds) by incorporating dance and movement into traditional phonological awareness activities. For example, a class of Kindergarteners working on recognizing rhyming words may practice two types of movement - a frog jump and a jumping jack- and then pair each movement with specific words to categorize and sort words into rhyming groups. First graders learning to segment words into individual phonemes may learn to chassé or leap from box-to-box as they segment in a life-size Elkonin sound box. In addition to reading, this program incorporates the Ohio fine arts learning standard of exploring movement with basic elements of dance, as well as the the Ohio social-emotional learning standard of demonstrating confidence in the ability to complete tasks and challenges independently. This program, best suited for grades PreK through 2nd grade, taps into kids’ kinesthetic learning ability and is a great supplement to any science of reading-based curriculum.
